Chapter Twelve

As exhausted as I was the next morning, I forced myself to get up and have a normal day—as normal as a day could be under the circumstances. I fed Diana her cereal and let her mash the heck out of her banana, laughing as her tiny fist smashed the soft fruit until it was flat.

“You shouldna let her play with her food,” Gareth objected.

“She’s home safe. Today she can do whatever she wants. She can eat candy all day and wash her doll in a sink full of dirty dishes. There are no rules.”

The vampire ghost eyed me warily. “Everything will be right in the end, Emma.”

I kept my gaze on Diana and spoke in a soothing tone. “Will it? Because right now I feel scared out of my wits.”

“He’s no more than a bully who doesn’t know how to make friends.”

“A bully with the powers of a demigod who seems hellbent on taking my daughter away from me.”

“He could’ve taken her last night, but he didn’t.”

I twisted to look at him. “Now you sound like Calix.”

The vampire ghost splayed his hands. “I’m only trying to stay positive.”

“How unlike you.” I turned back to Diana.

“He could’ve whisked her away last night and we’d never know the truth of what happened to her. Why didn’t he?”

“Because he wanted to show us that he could before he actually did. He was gloating. Trust me, he’ll do it again and next time, he’ll cross the border with her and never look back.”

Gareth drifted over to stand beside Diana. “Aye. You’re probably right. The question is when?”

I met his gaze. “No. The question is what do we do about it?”

“You say that as though you already know.”

“Not yet, but I’ll have a plan in place before Calix strikes again.” I doubted the demigod would come back a second night in a row. He’d want to give his victory time to settle in before he went for round two.

“Is that today’s schedule? Arrange the demise of a demigod?”

“It’s one item on the agenda. The other is to speak to Regina Perse.”

“Who’s that? Someone who can help us with Calix?”

“No. She’s a suspect in the murder of Zara Golden. She was Zara’s number two, which means she benefits directly from her death since she now gets to compete in her place.”

“I’m surprised you’re not leaving all that to the Valkyries.”

“Lucy asked for my help and I’m giving it to her. The longer this goes on, the worse it will be for Spellbound.”

“And for your Halo Honey.”

“Yes, for Daniel too. He’s worked too hard to redeem himself to have his reputation sullied by someone else’s bad behavior.”

Gareth lifted his chin. “How can I help?”

My expression softened. “Thank you. If you could keep a close eye on Diana today, even when Daniel’s with her, I would appreciate it.”

“You know he hates it when I hover.”

I winked. “What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.”
